21st December - Meditation

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. Luke 2: 1-5

Reflection - What a frustration – just when everything is planned something else crops up. Not content with the shock of Mary’s pregnancy now Joseph has to go to Bethlehem - miles away. How frustrating can be the demands of the world on us?

Only at Christmas is Joseph seen with Mary and Child, yet he is vital to this family and for Jesus. It is Joseph who is David’s tribe through him the line is traced and only because of Joseph did the go to Bethlehem. The infant child needed Joseph as much as Mary to guide and guard him. Through the hidden years of Jesus’ growing he needed fathering. He needed Joseph.

Prayer - God thank you for Joseph, for his willingness to be part of your plan.

We pray for those we know who often take a back seat – for those we cannot function without. We praise you for them, for their strength, support and wisdom. Amen.
