19th December - Meditation

Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone's astonishment he wrote, "His name is John." Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God. The neighbours were all filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, "What then is this child going to be?" For the Lord's hand was with him.
Luke 1:61-66

Reflection - Without doubt sometimes people surprise us and on occasion we surprise others. We surprise them by the things we say and the things we do. The crowd are amazed because Zechariah broke with tradition – he did something unexpected, radical, cutting edge and went against the flow. That of course isn’t always welcome and the crowd would have wondered – yet the lesson is that God was at the centre of this change in thinking and doing. Perhaps in our lives when we face something different we too like Zechariah will respond to the prompting and be obedient.

Prayer Transforming God I let go of all that holds me back from experiencing the greater glory of you working in my life, the life of your church and your world. Help me, like Zechariah, to take a stand, in preparing the way for others to follow your path. Amen
