Giving Up for Lent

Sorry to post so late. Sometimes weeks and days don't go as planned. Now a month on I thought I would catch up. So why the delay? Namely a broken wrist has made quite a few things difficult. Along with other things the doctor at the hospital said I was upside down....I knew what she meant but won't go into detail. However, I have been thinking alot about things being upside down.

How does life get turned upside down? Why do we feel under pressure to do? Do we sometimnes feel as though all our intentions,tasks and relationships have caved in on top of us?

Jesus said, "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.”

That is, following Jesus leads us to become a certain kind of person with a certain kind of life; namely, one that doesn’t get buried under the pile of sand.... This begs the question, “How did I get so upside down again?” Answer: "Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell--and great was its fall."

The thought of trying to keep my own head above water is a worrying thought. Worrying because I know my foot slips and my head goes under. Yet when my feet are on solid ground then it is easy for the head to be above water. When I am not worried about what I am standing on, when I know how firm the foundation then I can be focussed on the one who offers a foundation.

I love following Jesus, there is no other place I would rather be. I admire and respect him because of his courage and consistency. Jesus knows what to say and do, and how to say and do it. He leads us. He does not pretend to be something that he’s not. He is what He says, and he says what he is. He faces hardship with strength and prayer. He fears no-one, yet he gives himself up even his enemies.

His path is straight and good and walking in it gives a sense of identity and direction, a security that is not about comfort, but confidence and hope.

When with him, all is well and the pile of sand falling around does not seem so bad, after all it is the follish one that would start digging and building with it. For me solid ground that is it......

Tim Hughes song "When tears fall" have the wonderful lines

"When hope is lost. I'll call you Saviour,
When pain surrounds, I'll call you healer"

The book of Lamentations and Psalms offers us all the words of hope and faith building techniques to help us in our journey. Many of the psalmists practised the discipline of recalling God' faithfulness as a stepping stone towards worship and hope. Psalm 13 offers us these words
"How long, O LORD ? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and every day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?"

beginning with a desperate cry the psalmist continues to statements of trust in God
"But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing to the LORD,
for he has been good to me"

We have from the psalmist a wonderful truth that remembering releases rejoicing. When we cannot perceive God amidst the wilderness and pain, as clouds of uncertainty close in the way forward is to remind ourselves of what we know to be true and dependable - that is the grace of God.

Found myself wondering......

Over the past few weeks, which have been pretty awful with ill-health, - I have been reflecting alot. In doing so I have been drawn to the words of Matt and Beth Redman's song Blessed be your name. Profound words which echo the cry of many a heart. Where is God in it all or through it all? There are so many dichotomy's in life and for me this song personifies it.

Blessed be God in the sunset and the snow
Blessed be God in the nose bleeds and headaches
Blessed be God in the chicken dinners and chinese meals provided by others
Blessed be God in the words of tenderness and compassion
Blessed be God in the words of retaliation and anger
Blessed be God in the aunt and the uncle - one departed and the other nearing a new chapter
Blessed be God in the cards and flowers
Blessed be God in the tears and smiles
Blessed be God in the family and friends
Blessed be God in the known and unknown
Blessed be God forever and ever

Blessed be God in the wilderness for we humans only inhabit that place for a short time.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity - Who do you say HE is?

Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him Master.

Jesus no degree, yet they called Him Teacher.

Jesus no medicines, yet they called Him Healer.

Jesus no army, yet kings feared Him.

Jesus won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.

Jesus committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.

Jesus was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.

I feel honoured to serve such a leader that loves me.

Pleasing everyone?

Is there such a thing as pleasing everyone? Can it be done? Life is complicated and therefore full of complications - what floats one persons boat - drowns another and makes others disembark.

It has been widely accepted that you can’t go out there and please everyone. Or that is what people tell me - you can't please everyone Jackie - but you can please me? Also, what concerns me is that I feel this has created a situation where people have stopped trying to please anyone at all. A kind of "I'm alright Jack scenario". Of course what I am not saying is that we don't consider ourselves - nope not saying that at all - but I wonder if just sometimes we kind of mix up th balance a bit.

The bottom line is that we’re all unique – for better or for worse – and therefore the one-size-fits-all mentality rarely applies to real life situations. To further complicate things, just as there are some folks that are easy going and easy to please, there are others that are a little grumpy and find fault with everything. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle where we have reasonable expectations and as long as an effort has been made to meet those expectations, we’re satisfied.

So what is one to do? Give up? Live in a cave? Of course not. You simply need to set the expectation that not everyone will go along with what you plan/say/attempt/etc…. If everyone does go along with it and they’re happy, then great. If they don’t, you’re not surprised, or worse, disappointed.

But it isn't easy - we all want to be liked - but at what compromise and what cost? That's why I am trying to figure.

2008-2009 Review and Reflection

I have spent time some time over the past week reflecting on the last year. What a mixture of emotions it evokes. Some delightful, heart warming and transforming occasions and others which have cut to the heart and have made me feel crushed. Some are easier to share than others.

The highlight of the year has to be people - loving and devoted to God. Those who have shown love and friendship have been a delight and a joy. Getting to know some people better - and they know who they are - has been wonderful. There are some I could not have survived without - their kindness and support has been inspirational and steadfast. Thank you.

Another involves the people I have met - some through some very sad circumstances - to share journeys of birth and passing has been a privilege.

Yet with the joy has been the sorrow and the hard times:

The death of Nan continues to cut to the core - I miss her more than words than can say.

The issue of formation remains hard as a minister. Time pressure as well as other words spoken have been hurtful - I journey through this exploring who I am and my calling as I journey towards 2009.

The Warrington Carol

Traditionally each year the staff team perform a song at the annual CarolCade in aid of Action for children - this year was no exception. So we put pen to paper and using the tune to Mary's Boy child wrote the following. It went down a stormer....

Long time ago in the North West
In the town with a golden gate
There is a circuit Warrington
a varied town it longs to relate

Does one go into five?
As we responded yes we pray
Pre-empting mapping the way

To celebrate their call

You are lovely and caring. You help others and spread out a lot of sympathy. Your life aim maybe is to serve the people. But your weakness is that you forget about yourself, your own needs. All your time is hold back for your friends and family. You are always there for people in trouble. Ready for any emergency. You make a lot of sacrifices just to be a good human. But every woman has her needs, her longings and a destiny. Don't loose yourself in work or curing other people's souls. You will have your own problems in your life. Another problem is that you don't say your opinion when it's right and important to say it. People trample onto your soul if you are always so kind and lovely and helpful. They will play on you. Though you should try to relax more and enjoy your life, you should not loose the gift that was given to you to help others . Not everyone is created this way... You are unique and rare!

Christmas Day – Emmanuel - God with Us

Reading

Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.

Reflection

Emmanuel God is with us. In other words “he is here” not somewhere else but right here. In the midst, the centre of the world and OUR world.

Emmanuel. God with us. He who was in heaven, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and Spirit, descended into our world. Breathing our air, he felt our pain, knew our sorrows, and died for our sins. He didn't come to frighten us, but to show us the way to warmth and safety. Another way of putting it – Emmanuel God is with us – we are not alone. A God born as a helpless baby – the word becoming flesh unable to speak a word. The word vulnerable, relying on others and the community. God with us learning to walk, talk – this is not the remote God but the one.

May the peace and love of the Christ Child fill your hearts this day

Welcome Holy Child. Your presence here transforms us.
All praise to you O Lord. You have come and become one of us. We thank you for this Word made flesh, revealed to us in the manger. Grant that we may find in his birth the new birth that he brings in us, to live out your gospel of love in the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Christmas Eve – Wonderful Counsellor

Reading

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Reflection
Advent speaks of the coming of the "Promised One" into the world. The promised one Jesus Christ – he is a Wonderful, Counsellor. Justly is He called Wonderful, for He is both God and man.

Wonderful Counsellor… this is literally wonder-counsellor or supernatural counsellor, one who will come with great wisdom and insight that is beyond human capability. When Jesus came he came with a different level of teaching (Mk 1:23,27, Mt 22:33) and knew what people were thinking (Mt 12:25, Mk 2:8, Lk 5:22, 6:8, 11:17) and stopped the mouths of the religious teachers with his wisdom and insight. He knew and he still knows our heart desire, our delights. our joys and the depth of our sorrows. In that knowing God draws so very near and in such an extravagant demonstration of love – as a baby.

Prayer
God,
creator of all life, you made us in your image, and sent your Son to share our flesh.
On this Christmas Eve as we celebrate the glad time of his birth,
we pray that your love may be born anew in us.

Help us to respond to the greatness of your love by sharing it with others.
Amen.

Away in a Manger

Just how many times do we sing this? 15 times so far this year with three services to go - I am determined not to have them at those. It is not that I have anything too major against it - its nice enough - but you can have enough of a good thing.

23rd December - Prince of Peace

"Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" John 14:27

Reflection

What is Peace? According to Webster's dictionary, peace is a state of tranquillity, quiet, calm, freedom from civil disturbance, A state of security - being secure within a community, freedom from oppression, strife and disorder. In harmony in personal relations. Untroubled by conflict, agitation or commotion. Is peace desirable? Do you have it? Would you like to have it? How may we receive true peace.
Jesus in His last discourse with His disciples before His crucifixion said to them “Peace I leave with you”, How is it that Jesus could give His disciples "peace" when He was about to suffer on Calvary and His disciples would soon go through the worst experience of their lives up to that time? Just three days later, at evening on the day of His resurrection, Jesus came and stood in the midst of His disciples and said to them, "Peace be with you.-- Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord" (John 20:19, 20). What a Prince! Death and the grave could not hold Him.

Deep peace of the running wave to you,
Deep peace of the flowing air to you,
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you,
Deep peace of the shining stars to you,
Deep peace of the gentle night to you,
Moon and stars pour their healing light on you,
Deep peace of Christ, the light of the world to you,

22 December - Everlasting Father

Reading

Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

Reflection

How complex is the person of the Lord Jesus, in just a few breaths he is called Wonderful Counselor, Almighty God and now Everlasting Father.

Jesus is our Everlasting Father in the sense that He is the one who brings us to spiritual life. In John 14:6 Jesus told us that "no man comes to the Father, except through Him". We are new creatures in and because of Christ. It is because of Jesus that we have the opportunity to know eternal life. It is because of Jesus that we can know a new and life-giving relationship with the Father. Also, both aspects of His name give us great hope for our personal lives. The name "Father" is a familial term. And the name "Everlasting" describes how great He is. He's without beginning and without end. He was, is, and always will be. He's the One who revealed Himself to Moses when he asked God about His name. The answer was, "I am that I am." God revealed Himself to Moses as "I am." Yesterday, He was "I am," and today He's still "I am." And tomorrow He will still be "I am."

Prayer

Lord, be like treasure to me this Christmas.
Let me be willing to listen when I'm told of your glory.
Take away my fear and bring me peace.
Whatever else I may receive let me be glad to accept you into my life and to share you with those around me.
Amen.
